| Just a few days ago it was desert-rockers Hulk, today it’s the emo antics of the absurdly named Soon and all of a sudden Belgium appears to be churning out bands left, right and centre. Which of course is no bad thing - as long as some gems are uncovered in the process.
Whilst it’s probably a bit too far to suggest that Soon are a ‘gem’ of the band based on the 34-minutes of “Please Accelerate”, it is useful to be reminded that the continent is really starting to produce music that us stuffy Brits can easily enjoy. And it is this sentiment that probably perfectly summates the musical credence of Soon.
Soon might not be the bringers of a new dawn of music – on this release at least – but they have knocked out a number (eight in fact) of enjoyable ditties that fans of Fugazi and Sonic Youth should immediately find refuge within. “The Inland Revenue” and “Minor Operations” are decent tunes that don’t break the mould, but then nor do they spoil it – they simply do what they mean to.
This all might seem a little negative, but ultimately there’s a time and a place for most bands – and with the emo masses lapping up bands that sound like Soon at the moment, it would appear that their time is pretty much now. Of course, who knows what Soon might pull off with their second full-lengther, you never know, it might rival Mozart. Well...
